Il Castello di Andraz sorge su un grande masso trasportato a valle durante l’ultima glaciazione e si trova in posizione dominante sulla vallata. Si tratta di un luogo estremamente strategico per il controllo delle vie di comunicazione provenienti da sud (Belluno, Agordo, Caprile), da nord (Bressanone e Castelbadia, San Martino in Badia, Valparola), da Ampezzo attraverso la sella di Falzarego. Da tale posizione era infatti possibile vedere e comunicare con la Rocca di Pietore a sua volta collegata visivamente ad altre fortificazioni che permettevano il totale controllo delle strada che salendo da Agordo attraversava l’area dolomitica per giungere in Pusteria.
