                <text>Il porfido è una roccia magmatica effusiva (il magma fuoriesce da un vulcano e si raffredda velocemente in superficie), ma particolare, perché presenta grandi cristalli in una pasta di fondo molto fine o vetrosa. Infatti la lava che forma i porfidi fuoriesce dalla crosta terrestre lungo fratture molto estese cosicché  il magma ha più tempo per raffreddarsi e quindi alcuni minerali possono crescere in cristalli, visibili anche ad occhio nudo. Questa pietra non è frequente del letto del Piave a Belluno, poiché si trova nel basamento cristallino dolomitico. È più probabile, vista la forma dei “sassi” raccolti, che derivi da scarti di materiali edili perché è ampiamente utilizzata nell’edilizia per la pavimentazione soprattutto di strade.</text>

                <text>La selce è una roccia sedimentaria composta perlopiù da silice. La silice proviene dai resti scheletrici o gusci di piccoli organismi (es. diatomee, spugne, radiolari). Si tratta quindi di quarzo microcristallino che tende solitamente a concentrarsi in forma di lenti o noduli all’interno di strati calcarei; è estremamente compatta e, per la sua tendenza a rompersi generando margini translucidi e taglienti, è stata utilizzata molto dall’uomo preistorico. Il suo colore dipende da elementi accessori quali ossidi presenti nella roccia: se c’è ferro la pietra ha un colore rossiccio, se ha delle tracce di piombo diventa bluastra e se c’è del rame assume un colore verdastro; infine invece se c’è materia organica ha un colore nero. La disponibilità di questo tipo di materiale fu fondamentale per i nostri antenati, poiché la selce oltre a essere un ottimo strumento di taglio, quindi impiegato per la realizzazione di utensili per la caccia, è utilizzabile anche come pietra focaia per l’accensione del fuoco. Anche recentemente (1600-1890) la selce è stata usata come pietra focaia negli accendini e nei fucili antichi.</text>

Queste rocce possono differire molto tra loro per colore, forma e composizione dei granuli in base alla sabbia da cui si sono formate. Molte contengono minerali ferrosi, da cui il tipico colore arancione all’esterno, dovuto all’ossidazione del ferro; tuttavia, dato che l’alterazione degli ossidi procede dall’esterno verso l’interno, in un campione grande, nel nucleo interno si può vedere il reale colore che può essere grigio, verde e azzurro.</text>
